Nobody really knows exactly where a Valentine’s gift and Valentine’s Day comes from and how it originated. A first theory is that Valentine’s Day is named after a Christian priest, Saint Valentine, who lived in the third century. It seems that there was a law at the time that prohibited soldiers from marrying, because unmarried people would be more willing to die. St. Valentine would have secretly married soldiers. Emperor Claudius II is said to have discovered this and had him executed on February 14, 269. Because of his motto “love conquers all”, he would have died in this way as a martyr for love.
