2019 Year of Rembrandt and Dutch painters of the Golden Age

    Rembrandt in the Mauritshuis

On Wednesday 30 January Princess Beatrix officially opened the theme year Rembrandt in the Mauritshuis.

Officiële opening van het Rembrandtjaar - Mauritshuis Den Haag

Official opening year of Rembrandt – Mauritshuis , The Hague, The Netherlands

This official opening in the Mauritshuis in The Hague shows a special exhibition. For the first time, all 18 paintings that once came to the collection as Rembrandt were brought together in one exhibition. Not only the famous masterpieces are shown, but also paintings that are no longer attributed to the most famous painter in the world. These works of art are rarely or even never exhibited.

Rembrandt van Rijn, Saul en David - Mauritshuis, Den Haag

Rembrandt van Rijn, Saul and David – Mauritshuis, The Hague, The Netherlands

    The most important Dutch master

Van Rijn is considered the most important Dutch master of the 17th century. The Golden Age caused a considerable number of major assignments for the painter, as a result of which his reputation only increased. This popularity has not diminished over the centuries and even went abroad, a right theme year! Be inspired by the #Rembrandt year in 2019.

Rembrandt’s work can be admired throughout the year

Work by the hand of Rembrandt, but also from other masters of The Golden Age period can be admired in the Netherlands at various locations.

    A summary of the program

Where better to start than in the house where he lived and worked. The Rembrandt House Museum is housed in the former home of the painter and is the only museum in the world that is completely dedicated to Rembrandt. This year, the museum presents no less than three different exhibitions in honor of the theme year.

From 1 February to 19 May the exhibition Rembrandt’s Social Network can be visited. This exhibition revolves around his social relationships and the role they played in his life and work. The second exhibition Inspired by Rembrandt can be visited from 7 June to 1 September. In addition to Rembrandt’s own work, this exhibition also shows work by contemporaries and contemporary artists who have been inspired by the great master. The last exhibition Laboratory Rembrandt can be visited from 21 September to 16 February 2020. A laboratory-like setting is created, in which new insights are revealed. The exhibition brings the world of material-technical research to life.

Since 24 November last year, the exhibition Rembrandt and Saskia: Love in the Golden Age can be seen in the Frisian Museum. The exhibition takes you on a romantic trip to the 17th century. You dive into the love life of the Golden Age.

From 15 February, the Rijksmuseum will present a retrospective of all paintings, etchings and drawings by Rembrandt from its own collection. The Rijksmuseum has the largest collection of his paintings in the world. Given the vulnerability of some of the etchings and drawings, it is special that the entire collection is shown together. It will be a very representative overview of his entire oeuvre. Moreover, the exhibition All Rembrandts gives a unique image of the painter as a person and artist.
